The CPI has pressed for an immediate rehabilitation package for residents of the P&T Apartment Complex at Mundamveli, where families are continuing an indefinite protest over what they allege are deplorable living conditions.

The Left Democratic Front alliance partner has also sought a comprehensive probe to identify and bring to book those responsible for the alleged structural deficiencies that residents say have resulted in crumbling and leaking apartments.

CPI delegation visits protest site

A CPI delegation led by district secretary N. Arun visited the apartment complex on Tuesday and expressed solidarity with the residents staging the protest.

Mr. Arun claimed that the CPI had flagged shortcomings in the project at the construction stage itself.

The visit drew added attention because it came after controversial remarks by former Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] MLA K.J. Maxy about the affected families.

Those remarks prompted the CPI(M) district leadership to issue a clarification and reaffirm its solidarity with the residents.

Mr. Maxy had accused the residents of benefiting from the housing project implemented by the LDF government and then making a political volte-face after the change in the State government.

Although Mr. Maxy has withdrawn the statement, the residents have said they would settle for nothing less than an unconditional apology.

Asked about Mr. Maxy’s comment, Mr. Arun said the CPI(M) itself had rejected it and that an individual’s opinion need not be taken seriously.

He, however, described the comment as “inappropriate”.

Demand for relocation and accountability

“Prima facie, it is clear that the residents are living in highly deplorable conditions. A rehabilitation package with better terms should be announced immediately,” Mr. Arun said.

He said the residents should be relocated without delay.

Mr. Arun also called for a probe to be announced to identify those responsible and ensure that they are punished.

He said fines should be imposed on the guilty and that the amount should be distributed among the affected families.

According to Mr. Arun, the shortcomings in the construction are evident even to children.

He said the CPI would stand firmly with the residents in their protests and legal battles.

Mr. Arun also said the issue need not be viewed through the prism of political affiliations.

The CPI’s intervention is significant because it has come from an LDF alliance partner at a time when the controversy over the apartment complex has also drawn the CPI(M) district leadership into issuing a clarification.

The party’s demand combines immediate relief for residents with accountability for the alleged structural deficiencies that have led to the present protest.

CPI State council members K.N. Sugathan and T. Reghuvaran, assistant secretary M.M. George, and executive member K.K. Santhosh Babu were part of the delegation that visited the complex.

The report was published on September 29, 2026, at 10:35 pm IST.
