Amid preparations for Simhastha 2028, opposition has intensified in the pilgrimage town of Omkareshwar. Local citizens, traders and saints have announced a two-day shutdown of the town on October 19 and 20. The decision was taken at a meeting of local residents and an all-party group held on Friday night.

The protest is linked to the proposed development works for Simhastha. Residents fear that the plans could affect houses and shops in Omkareshwar. They are also angry that action has not been taken on their 19-point list of demands.

Those leading the agitation say they are not against development. However, they have made it clear that they will not accept the interests of families and business owners who have been settled in the area for years being ignored in the name of development.

The proposed projects have now created a challenge for local people who are trying to protect both their homes and their businesses. A meeting of citizens and representatives of all parties was held on Friday night to discuss the issue. The 19-point demands placed by a 16-member committee were discussed during the meeting.

As the expected action on these demands has not taken place, angry residents have called for the town to remain closed on October 19 and 20. The shutdown is being presented as part of the movement against the proposed action affecting local residents and traders.

The affected people have demanded proper compensation, rehabilitation and protection of employment on the lines of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor. They have said that houses and shops should be independently assessed on the basis of their current market value. They have also demanded that the demarcation process be carried out in a fair and impartial manner.

Another demand concerns people living in houses built on government leases. Eligible people who have been living in the area for a long time and those who have been running businesses there for years should also receive the benefit of rehabilitation, the affected residents have said.

They have further demanded that alternative arrangements must be ensured before any displacement takes place. The committee has specifically sought 60×90-foot plots for affected families on both sides of the main road from the statue of Tantya Mama near the welcome gate to Ganesh Nagar.

The demands also include providing nearby alternative shops to shopkeepers. Tenants have been asked to be given priority in the rehabilitation process. The protesters have also demanded that the loss of employment be included while calculating compensation.

In addition, the affected people have sought sufficient time to remove their belongings before any action is taken. They say these arrangements are necessary to prevent families, shopkeepers and tenants from facing further difficulties during the development work.

The report lists statements from Mahant Mangaldas Tyagi Maharaj, chairman of the Shatdarshan Sant Mandal, identified by a black turban; Santosh Verma, town BJP president, identified by an orange kurta; Rajesh Yadav, Leader of the Opposition in the Omkareshwar Municipal Council, identified by a white shirt; and Champabai, councillor and town Congress president, identified as a woman.

For now, the protesters have made their strategy clear regarding the proposed shutdown of Omkareshwar on October 19 and 20. Attention will remain on the administration’s response and on the steps it takes over the demands of the affected people.

The key issue in the coming days will be how a balance is created between the development works for Simhastha 2028 and the interests of local citizens.
