A Chinese businessman known for his extraordinary generosity has ignited controversy after revealing he once dismissed an employee for excluding his mother from his wedding due to her appearance. Cui Peijun, founder and chairman of Henan Kuangshan Crane Co., Ltd., shared the incident during a recent public discussion, drawing mixed reactions online.

A Generous Employer with a Firm Moral Stance

Cui, who operates out of Xinxiang in Henan province, is widely celebrated as "China's most generous boss." His reputation stems from his lavish employee benefits and philanthropic efforts. At the company’s annual gala in February, Cui distributed a staggering 60 million yuan (approximately US$8.8 million) in cash bonuses to staff. Total year-end payouts reportedly exceeded 180 million yuan, reflecting his belief that higher wages can ease the financial burdens of young workers struggling with mortgages and car loans.

Beyond his corporate generosity, Cui has also made significant contributions to education. Since 2004, he has donated over 35 million yuan to support more than 4,800 university students from low-income families. This summer, his company launched a training programme for employees' children, offering internships to 331 participants.

Public Reaction Divided

Cui’s decision to fire the employee over a personal matter has sparked heated debate online, amassing 24 million views on social media. While some have lauded him for upholding moral values, others have questioned whether employers should have the authority to intervene in workers’ private lives. The incident raises broader concerns about the boundaries between professional and personal spheres in workplace culture.

Cui’s actions, though controversial, underscore his commitment to principles he deems integral to character and family values. However, the debate continues over whether such interventions are appropriate, even from a boss as benevolent as Cui.
