Chinese researchers have developed an artificial intelligence-powered robot capable of delivering needle-free vaccinations to pigs with a 93.3% success rate, potentially transforming the labour-intensive process of swine immunisation.

The innovative system, created by the Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, combines a six-axis robotic arm with advanced AI to locate the base of a pig's tail and administer a vaccine injection into its buttock. The process is designed to occur while the pig is eating, minimising stress and awareness of the procedure.

A Solution to Industry Challenges

Vaccination is a critical yet resource-heavy task in pig farming, with breeding pigs requiring multiple injections throughout their production cycles. Traditionally, this has relied on human workers, leading to issues such as broken needles, missed doses, and inaccurate injection placement. The introduction of this AI-driven robot addresses these challenges by offering a more precise, automated alternative.

Li Bin, a research fellow at the Intelligent Equipment Research Centre, highlighted the broader implications of this technology, describing it as a step towards "less-human, automated and intelligent large-scale pig farming." The findings were detailed in a study published in the peer-reviewed journal Transactions of the Chinese Society of Agricultural Engineering in June.

The development underscores China's push to integrate robotics and AI into agriculture, aiming to boost efficiency and reduce reliance on manual labour. As global demand for pork remains high, innovations like this could play a crucial role in meeting production needs while addressing workforce shortages and improving animal welfare.

This breakthrough could signal a broader shift towards automation in livestock farming, with potential applications beyond vaccination. For now, the robot's success rate of over 93% marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of smarter, more sustainable agricultural practices.
