China's EV sales hit record 65.2 percent of passenger vehicles in April

China's electric vehicle market reached a fresh milestone in April, with battery-powered and plug-in hybrid cars capturing 65.2 per cent of all passenger vehicle sales in the country.

The adoption rate set a new record as 1.54 million cars changed hands across mainland China during the month, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). The figure narrowly surpassed the previous high of 65.1 per cent recorded one month earlier.

War-driven fuel costs accelerate shift

The Iran war is pushing the electrification trend forward more rapidly, with rising fuel prices prompting Chinese motorists to abandon petrol-powered vehicles. The shift is occurring even as the broader automotive market shows sluggish performance.

"Consumers are convinced of EVs' advantages now that range anxiety has been largely eased," said Zhao Zhen, a sales director at Shanghai-based auto dealer Wan Zhuo Auto.

Zhao predicted the trend would continue, stating that higher penetration rates can be expected as more drivers shun petrol cars.

The milestone underscores how quickly China's car market is pivoting from internal combustion engines to electric powertrains, with improved battery range and external cost pressures combining to reshape consumer preferences.
