China’s electric vehicle (EV) sales dropped 3.9% year-on-year in July, marking the seventh consecutive month of decline as government incentives fade and consumer demand weakens. The slump comes even as overseas shipments of Chinese EVs surged by 147.8% during the same period, underscoring a stark contrast between domestic and export markets.

Domestic Market Struggles Intensify
Sales of pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles within China also fell 5.8% from June, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Overall car deliveries, including petrol-powered vehicles, plunged 20.9% year-on-year to 1.46 million units in July, with EVs accounting for 65.1% of total sales.

Industry experts warn that the prolonged downturn could force smaller EV companies out of business. “A bleak market outlook is likely to affect most small [EV] companies, as some of them will be forced to close down their businesses,” said Phate Zhang, founder of Shanghai-based industry data provider CnEVPost. Zhang also noted that price cuts might become a necessary strategy for all players to stimulate sales in the coming months.

Year-to-Date Decline Reflects Broader Challenges
From January to July, Chinese carmakers delivered 5.67 million EVs to domestic customers, a 12.5% drop compared to the same period last year. The decline highlights the challenges faced by the world’s largest EV market as it grapples with reduced subsidies and intensifying competition.

Why This Matters
China’s EV sector, which has been a global leader in production and adoption, is now facing significant headwinds. The fading of government incentives, which previously spurred rapid growth, coupled with a price war among manufacturers, is reshaping the market landscape. The downturn could have broader implications for global EV supply chains, given China’s dominance in battery production and vehicle exports.
