China’s AI Revenue Set to Hit $13 Billion Amid Cost Reductions and Technological Advancements: Goldman Sachs
China’s artificial intelligence (AI) sector is poised for significant growth, with Goldman Sachs projecting revenue to reach US$13 billion by year-end. The surge is attributed to breakthroughs in performance and cost efficiency, alongside increasing adoption of domestic AI models in global markets.
Competitive Pricing Drives Adoption
Goldman Sachs highlighted intensifying competition among Chinese AI models as they strive for the optimal balance between performance and price. MiniMax, a Hong Kong-listed AI firm, recently launched its H3 model under an open-weight approach, offering multi-modal capabilities—processing text, images, video, audio, and music—at just 30 to 50 per cent of prevailing market prices. This aggressive pricing strategy is expected to accelerate adoption.
New Models Rival Global Leaders
On the same day as MiniMax’s launch, DeepSeek introduced API access for its V4 Flash model, which boasts front-end coding capabilities comparable to Zhipu AI’s flagship GLM-5.2. Both models have earned recognition on Arena AI’s global leaderboard, with GLM-5.2 ranking seventh and V4 Flash closely following in eighth place. Such advancements underscore the growing competitiveness of Chinese AI systems on the international stage.
Revenue Projections for Key Players
Goldman Sachs has revised its annual recurring revenue (ARR) forecasts for leading firms, estimating US$2.5 billion for Zhipu AI and US$1 billion for MiniMax by the end of the year. These figures reflect the rapid adoption of their cutting-edge technologies and their ability to capture a larger share of global AI token usage.
Why It Matters
China’s AI sector is not only advancing technologically but also reshaping global market dynamics through cost-effective solutions. The success of models like H3 and V4 Flash demonstrates the country’s ability to compete with established players, potentially redefining benchmarks for performance and affordability in the AI industry.
