China Mobile’s Hohhot Hub Triples Capacity to 20,100 Petaflops Amid AI Push
China Mobile expands its Hohhot data centre to 20,100 petaflops, including 16,700 petaflops for AI, in a US$403 million project.
China Mobile triples capacity at mega Inner Mongolia computing hub amid nation’s AI push
The recently completed expansion of China Mobile’s data centre in Hohhot has lifted its total processing capacity to 20,100 petaflops, according to a report by Inner Mongolia Daily.
China Mobile, one of China’s state-backed telecoms giants, said the facility is its largest intelligent computing hub in northern Inner Mongolia. The expansion comes as Beijing seeks to strengthen digital infrastructure to support the country’s artificial intelligence ambitions.
Processing capacity reaches 20,100 petaflops
The new capacity is three times the hub’s previous level of 6,700 petaflops, according to data from a 2024 report by the state-run People’s Posts and Telecommunications News.
A petaflop measures computer speed and represents one quadrillion operations per second. Of the hub’s total capacity, 16,700 petaflops are dedicated to artificial intelligence and smart computing tasks, Inner Mongolia Daily reported on Monday.
The figures underline the facility’s role in China’s expanding computing infrastructure, particularly for workloads linked to artificial intelligence and other smart computing applications.
US$403 million expansion
The expansion represents an investment of US$403 million and covers 44,500 square metres, an area equivalent to six soccer fields. The facility has a total power capacity of 120 megawatts.
The completed project adds substantial computing capacity to a major data centre in northern Inner Mongolia, while directing most of that capacity towards artificial intelligence and smart computing tasks.
