Canada seeks to wrap up India trade talks soon, as US ties fray

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said trade negotiations with India are making “good progress”, with both sides aiming to conclude the talks by the G20 summit in mid-December.

Carney cites progress in negotiations

Carney made the remarks at a news conference on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

“We are making good progress in our trade negotiations with India,” Carney said.

He said he and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had committed to try to conclude the negotiations by the G20.

The summit is scheduled for December 14-15 at Trump National Doral in Miami.

Modi visit expected around G20 period

Carney also said India had, to his understanding, confirmed that Modi would visit Canada around that time.

The precise date of the visit had not been finalised, Carney said.

The timing links two parallel diplomatic tracks: the attempt to wrap up trade talks and the expected visit by Modi to Canada around the G20 period.

Carney’s comments came as Canada seeks to wrap up India trade talks soon, while its ties with the US fray.
