Calicut University to Conduct Inspections of Autonomous Colleges Every Three Years

The Syndicate of the University of Calicut has decided to initiate inspections at affiliated autonomous colleges every three years. This decision was taken during a meeting held on Wednesday at the university's main campus in Tenhipalam, Malappuram district. A committee comprising Syndicate members and subject experts will oversee the inspections.

Inquiry Into Moderation Marks Scandal

The Syndicate also decided to probe irregularities in the awarding of moderation marks. Specifically, the standing committee on exams will investigate how 93 students graduated after receiving moderation marks in an unauthorised manner. Additionally, a detailed inquiry has been proposed into an earlier case where 51 students were granted extra marks during a moderation process. These investigations reflect the university's efforts to address allegations of malpractice and ensure transparency in its academic processes.

Financial Allocation and Appointments

In other decisions, the Syndicate approved a ₹3 crore allocation for the Centre for Distance and Online Education in the 2026-27 financial year. Syed Marzook Bafaqui has been appointed as the university’s standing counsel in the Supreme Court, while C. Suresh Kumar has been named director of the university’s publications division. However, the latter appointment faced objections from pro-Left members, who argued that the matter was not included as an agenda item and lacked supporting documents during the previous meeting on July 9.

Calls for Transparency in Decision-Making

Pro-Left members of the Syndicate raised concerns about procedural lapses in key appointments. They insisted that all policy matters requiring Syndicate approval should be circulated as specific agenda items well in advance, accompanied by relevant records. This, they argued, would uphold statutory procedures and ensure collective decision-making.

Faculty Leave and Student Allowances

The Syndicate also approved duty leave for faculty members involved in project-based programmes, enabling them to participate in academic activities and professional engagements. Additionally, the travelling and daily allowances for students participating in study tours within the university’s teaching departments were enhanced. These measures aim to support academic growth and professional development within the university.

The Syndicate meeting will continue on Thursday, with further decisions anticipated.
