Brazil to Issue Yuan Bonds Annually, Strengthening Ties with China
Brazil plans to regularly issue yuan-denominated bonds, enhancing ties with China and aiding local firms in accessing Chinese investment.
Brazil Plans Annual Yuan Bond Sales in China, Says Treasury Official
Brazil has announced its intention to become a regular issuer of yuan-denominated bonds in China, aiming to establish the Chinese currency as a consistent part of its external debt strategy. Francisco Segundo, deputy secretary for public debt at Brazil's National Treasury, revealed the plan during a webinar hosted by the China-Brazil Business Council on Wednesday.
Debut Expected This Year, But Focus Is Strategic
While the inaugural issuance is anticipated before the end of 2023, Segundo clarified that the government is not dependent on the proceeds, given that external debt constitutes just 4% of Brazil's federal debt stock. Instead, the emphasis is on the broader benefits of the move. "Given our size, it is much more qualitative than quantitative for now," Segundo explained.
The primary objective is to establish a sovereign yield curve in yuan, which would facilitate access for Brazilian companies to Chinese investors. Without such a benchmark, it has been challenging for Brazilian firms to secure financing in China. Segundo noted, "It is obviously a welcome resource, and it tends to be cheap. But it is much more about unlocking new investors."
Strategic Implications
This marks a significant step in deepening financial ties between Brazil and China, its largest trading partner. By issuing yuan bonds regularly, Brazil aims to provide its companies with a clearer pricing framework for borrowing in the Chinese market. The move also reflects a broader trend of countries diversifying their debt portfolios and reducing reliance on traditional reserve currencies like the US dollar.
Though the debut issuance is expected to be modest in size, the strategic intent underscores Brazil's commitment to strengthening its economic relationship with China.
