Bogota mayor Carlos Fernando Galan has called on the Chinese-led consortium building the city’s first metro line to send more workers to its stations.

The intervention came after Colombia’s comptroller, the country’s top auditor, warned that delays in several parts of the project could push back its opening in March 2028.

Road works reported behind schedule

Colombia’s comptroller found that road works were 52 per cent behind on the US$5.75 billion line.

The line is due for trial runs in September 2027, ahead of the opening date cited by the auditor.

The warning places the project’s construction progress and the availability of workers at its stations at the centre of the latest concerns.

Galan said the project had reached an important phase in an interview published by local news magazine Semana on Monday.

“We are entering a critical stage, which is the final stretch,” Galan said.

“We have to ask Metro Linea 1 to get moving and put more staff in the stations.”

The auditor’s warning is significant for the project because it identified delays that could affect the March 2028 opening.

The project is Colombia’s capital’s first metro line, and the report cited its US$5.75 billion cost while noting the road works delay.
