BMC to Combat Illegal Waste Dumping with CCTV Surveillance

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced plans to install CCTV cameras at garbage dumping hotspots across Mumbai as part of a citywide cleanliness drive. The initiative follows directions from the Bombay High Court and aims to curb illegal waste dumping by identifying offenders and imposing strict penalties.

Comprehensive Cleanup Campaign Underway

The BMC’s Solid Waste Management Department has launched a sweeping campaign to improve sanitation across Mumbai and its suburbs. A key focus is the permanent elimination of Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs)—locations where waste is repeatedly dumped. These points have been identified and mapped ward-wise on Google Maps to facilitate monitoring and targeted action.

Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, on August 1, instructed Assistant Commissioners from all ward offices to conduct regular inspections and maintain high cleanliness standards in their jurisdictions.

Tackling Waste and Urban Obstructions

The BMC’s efforts extend beyond waste management. The civic body has also initiated a drive to clear footpaths of obstructions, including unauthorised hawkers and illegal ramps, particularly along major roads. Assistant Commissioners have been tasked with removing these encroachments to ensure pedestrian safety and ease of movement.

Additionally, the BMC is addressing traffic bottlenecks and prioritising the resolution of pothole complaints received via the Marg App. Immediate action will also be taken against unauthorised constructions across the city.
