BJP stages protest in Shivamogga against State government

BJP workers in Shivamogga gathered at T. Seenappa Shetti Circle, also known as Gopi Circle, on Thursday to protest against the Congress government, accusing it of failing to fund welfare schemes and development commitments.

The protest was organised by the Shivamogga district unit of the BJP and was led by district president N.K. Jagadish.

Party workers raised slogans against Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and the Congress government during the demonstration.

The BJP alleged that the State government under Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar had gone bankrupt and that no funds were left for welfare schemes.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Jagadish said the government did not have money to compensate farmers affected by the drought.

He also said the State’s total borrowings had risen alarmingly.

Claims over funds and welfare delivery

Mr. Jagadish said the Finance Department had written to the State government stating that there were no funds available for any new schemes.

He alleged that, despite the fund crunch, the Chief Minister was misleading the public by announcing funds for development projects in the coastal region.

The BJP leader further alleged that elderly and differently-abled persons were not receiving their pensions regularly.

He also alleged corruption in the supply of shoes and socks to schoolchildren.

The protest focused on the BJP’s charge that the government’s financial position was affecting welfare measures, drought compensation and public services.

District general secretary Harikrishna, party leader S. Dattatri and others took part in the protest.
