V. Rajana, 36, visited the pawn shop run by K. Dhilip Kumar, 26, on July 17 claiming she needed funds for her husband's medical treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru. She presented three sovereigns of gold jewellery along with fake medical documents to support her story.
How the fraud unravelled
Kumar conducted an initial test on the jewellery before disbursing ₹1.5 lakh to Rajana. However, after she left the shop, a closer examination revealed that only a small portion of the ornament was actual gold while the rest was fake metal.
The pawnbroker immediately alerted Vaniyambadi town police, who registered a case. Special teams deployed by the police analysed CCTV footage from the area and tracked Rajana to her hideout in Bengaluru.

Vaniyambadi town police arrested Rajana on Wednesday on charges of cheating. She has been lodged at the sub-jail in Tirupattur town, and further investigation is ongoing.
