Woman arrested for staging robbery to cover up theft of 4.40 lakh rupees

Police in Muzaffarnagar have cracked a case of alleged robbery and assault that turned out to be an elaborate hoax staged by the family's own daughter-in-law to cover up a theft she had committed. The woman, identified as Gulshana, wife of Akram and resident of Harinagar village, was arrested on August 26 after investigators grew suspicious of the original complaint.

The case began on August 24 when Inam, son of Irfan, reported to Purkaji police station that unknown thieves had broken into their home in Harinagar village and stolen approximately 14 lakh rupees kept inside a grain storage tank. The complainant also alleged that when a woman in the family tried to resist, the intruders attacked her with a knife and snatched her earring.

However, during the course of investigation, police found several inconsistencies in the account. Upon sustained questioning, Gulshana confessed to the crime. She admitted that driven by greed, she had broken the lock of the grain tank herself and taken the money. To cover up her theft, she created a scene by shouting and calling family members, then fabricated the story about unknown thieves breaking in and attacking her.

Following her arrest, police recovered 4.40 lakh rupees hidden inside a cooler at the house, along with one earring. Gulshana revealed that the actual amount in the tank was only 4.40 lakh rupees, not the 14 lakh rupees that had been reported stolen. Police have amended the charges in the case accordingly and initiated legal proceedings against the accused woman.

The investigation team was led by Station House Officer Manvendra Singh Bhati and included Sub-Inspectors Naveen Kumar and Nisha Singh along with other police personnel. The case serves as a reminder of how far some individuals will go to conceal their crimes, even at the expense of their own family members.
