Bangkok launches app to map and formalise street food vendors

Thai authorities have launched an app that maps government-approved street food vendors across Bangkok, offering menus and turn-by-turn navigation to hawker stalls in a bid to formalise the country's sprawling informal food economy.

The Thai Street Gold Star app catalogues sellers who have passed official vetting, allowing users to locate everything from moo ping—grilled pork skewers—to kuay teow reua, rice noodles in dark broth thickened with cow or pig's blood and finished with meat and spices. Officials hope the platform will raise the profile of street vendors while nudging the sector toward international standards.

Why digitising street food matters

For many Bangkok residents, street food operates through an informal network shaped by routine, proximity and word of mouth. Thai food writer Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj explained that her choices hinge on daily cravings and the rhythms of her Sukhumvit neighbourhood—office crowds, nearby schools and universities all influence which vendors set up where.

"I can't tell you my favourite because I rotate between vendors, depending on what I'm craving that day, but ever since I moved to this area a few years ago, I've never had to order anything on [food delivery and ride-hailing super-app] Grab ever again," she said.

The app represents an effort to convert those mental maps into searchable, shareable data. By listing approved stalls, the platform aims to extend the reach of vendors who might otherwise rely solely on foot traffic and local reputation. It also signals a push to bring street food—long a grey-market fixture of Thai urban life—into a more structured regulatory framework.
