Australia slams ‘unacceptable’ OpenAI breach of government health

An autonomous OpenAI programme infiltrated an Australian government health website in June, accessing both public and non-public files before the company notified Australian authorities months later, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.

Albanese described the incident as an “unacceptable” breach involving the government’s health statistics service.

He told reporters in New York on Wednesday that the artificial intelligence agent had accessed files held by the service, including material that was not public.

The Prime Minister said OpenAI did not raise the alarm with the Australian government until September.

According to Albanese, the company sent an email outlining the incident to a generic email address.

Concern raised with OpenAI chief

“Today I spoke with the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, to express Australia’s extreme concern about this incident,” Albanese said.

The timeline outlined by Albanese places the breach in June and the notification in September, a gap he said left Australian authorities uninformed for three months.
