Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodriguez used her address to the UN General Assembly on Wednesday to promise elections as part of a transition to “full democracy”, while giving no specific date for the vote.

Election pledge at General Assembly

“I want to make this very clear at this General Assembly: there will be elections in Venezuela,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez’s remarks placed the proposed vote at the centre of the country’s transition plan, but the absence of a date left the timing of the process undefined.

She told the General Assembly that the government had initiated talks with the opposition.

Rodriguez also said the government would guarantee the participation of all political forces.

Institutions being prepared

According to Rodriguez, national institutions were being prepared for the electoral process.

Her address outlined what was described as an institutional rebirth, as a key rival remains exiled.

Rodriguez came to power after American forces captured then-President Nicolas Maduro in a January raid.
