Andhra Pradesh to Stock Anti-Snake Venoms in All 108 Ambulances

In a significant move to enhance emergency medical care, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced that anti-snake venoms (ASVs) will now be stocked in all 108 ambulance services across the state. Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav, in a statement on Saturday, said the decision was prompted by the rising number of snakebite emergencies, with 3,104 such cases reported since June 2025.

Swift Response to Save Lives

Snakebite victims require immediate medical attention, as delays can lead to critical complications. To address this, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) in ambulances have been trained to administer ASVs after consulting doctors. If symptoms suggest venom is spreading, EMTs will consult doctors at the Emergency Response Centre in Mangalagiri using dome cameras installed in the ambulances. This system allows doctors to assess the patient’s condition in real time and guide the EMTs on the appropriate course of action.

In severe cases, ASVs will be administered immediately following the doctor’s instructions. However, EMTs are strictly prohibited from administering the antidote without prior medical consultation, as emphasized by K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu, Director of Secondary Health. He noted that EMTs have been trained to recognize signs of envenomation and communicate effectively with doctors to ensure timely intervention.

Golden Hour Focus

The initiative underscores the importance of the "golden hour"—the critical window of time immediately following a medical emergency when prompt treatment can significantly improve survival chances. By equipping ambulances with ASVs and enabling treatment en route, the government aims to maximize this crucial period to save lives.

This development marks a proactive step in addressing the state’s snakebite emergency burden, ensuring faster, more effective care for victims in rural and urban areas alike.
