Andhra Pradesh government launches initiative to improve mobile connectivity in remote areas

In a bid to ensure universal mobile connectivity across the state, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced a comprehensive support package for telecom service providers (TSPs). The initiative, detailed in orders issued by the Information Technology, Electronics and Communications Department, includes free land allocation, subsidised power supply, and viability gap funding to facilitate the installation of mobile towers in underserved villages and habitations.

Addressing Connectivity Challenges in Rural Areas

The decision stems from the persistent lack of reliable mobile coverage in several rural and remote areas, where low population density has made telecom infrastructure commercially unviable. TSPs, including BSNL, Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea, had approached the government seeking assistance to overcome cost barriers related to land and power. Responding to these concerns, the state has committed to providing the necessary support to expand networks into these uncovered regions.

Review Mechanism for Long-Term Viability

The government plans to review the assistance every three years to determine whether support should continue in locations where subscriber numbers have grown and infrastructure has become self-sustaining. TSPs participating in the initiative are required to adhere to prescribed timelines for setting up mobile towers and associated infrastructure.

Seamless Connectivity Through Intra-Circle Roaming

To ensure efficient use of telecom infrastructure, the initiative includes provisions for intra-circle roaming, allowing seamless connectivity across different networks. This is particularly significant for areas where standalone networks may not be financially feasible.

Aiming for 100% Mobile Connectivity

The government views this model as a scalable solution to address connectivity gaps, ultimately aiming to achieve 100% mobile network coverage across Andhra Pradesh. By enabling access to mobile services in previously uncovered areas, the initiative is expected to improve access to citizen services and integrate remote communities into the digital ecosystem.
