Andhra Pradesh Forms High-Powered Panel On Attacks Against Journalists
Andhra Pradesh issues GO 1913 setting up a high-powered committee to examine attacks, murders and harassment involving journalists.
The Andhra Pradesh government has issued GO 1913 constituting a high-powered committee to examine cases of attacks, murders and harassment involving journalists.
Committee to include ministers and media representatives
According to the Government Order issued on Wednesday, the committee will be chaired by the State Home Minister.
The Information and Public Relations Minister will serve as vice-chairman, while representatives of journalists’ associations and the Commissioner of Information and Public Relations will be members.
The government said the panel is meant to address issues concerning the safety of journalists and help protect the values of journalism as the “Fourth Estate”.
The decision follows demands from journalists’ organisations for effective action in cases involving attacks on scribes and for greater protection while they discharge their duties.
Minister held discussions with officials
The government said Information and Public Relations Minister Kolusu Parthasarathi held discussions with senior officials on the constitution of the committee.
It also stated that facilities such as accreditation and health insurance for journalists had been restored.
The government claimed that several journalists who were eligible for accreditation during the previous government had not received the facility.
It further claimed that the number of accreditations increased after all eligible journalists were considered under the present system.
Earlier panel cited by government
The government referred to the high-powered committee constituted in 2016 during the previous TDP government.
It said that committee had functioned effectively.
By linking the new committee to demands from journalists’ organisations and to earlier arrangements for accreditation, health insurance and a previous high-powered panel, the government presented the measure as part of its response to concerns over journalist safety and professional protections.
