The latest Pew Research Centre report has put Americans’ average rating of China at 37 out of 100, while Russia’s average stands at 27. Both countries rank near the bottom among the G20 countries covered in the study.

China viewed more favourably than Russia

Although China receives the higher rating, Americans’ opinion of the country remains more negative than positive, according to the report. The findings show that China is viewed more favourably than Russia as the United States prepares to host the G20 summit in Miami in December.

Pew said Americans gave China an average score of 37 out of 100, compared with 27 for Russia. The difference places China above Russia in the rankings, but does not move either country close to the countries that received the warmest ratings.

Canada, Australia, Japan and Italy received the highest ratings, with average scores in the mid-to-high 60s. This contrast shows the wide variation in how Americans view the countries participating in the G20.

Russia draws especially cold ratings

Russia received particularly negative views in the study. “Russia stands out for its especially icy ratings: 51 per cent of Americans have a very cold view of the country, significantly more than the third or so who have very cold views of China,” Pew researchers wrote.

The report was released on Friday. Its findings provide a comparison of American public opinion toward China, Russia and other G20 participants ahead of the summit in Miami.
