AAIB updates on Air India Flight AI-171 accident investigation

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has released an interim update on the investigation into the tragic accident involving Air India Flight AI-171. The Boeing 787-8 aircraft, operating from Ahmedabad to London, crashed shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, 2025. Today marks one year since the incident.

AAIB expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and acknowledged the ongoing pain of affected individuals. The investigation is being conducted under the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules, 2017, and ICAO Annex 13 standards. A preliminary report was issued on July 12, 2025, detailing initial findings.

Over the past year, investigators have examined technical, operational, organizational, and human factors related to the accident. This process involved collaboration with accredited representatives, technical advisers, and subject matter experts. Significant progress has been made in analyzing aircraft systems, flight recorder data, engine components, and maintenance records.

AAIB emphasized its commitment to a thorough, evidence-based investigation. Additional technical evaluations will continue as needed to ensure comprehensive findings. The final report will be released after completing all investigative activities and international review processes.

The bureau urged stakeholders and the public to avoid speculation, reiterating that the investigation aims to improve aviation safety rather than assign blame. AAIB reaffirmed its dedication to transparency and professionalism in its efforts to enhance civil aviation safety.
