West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has confirmed that eggs will remain part of mid-day meals in Kolkata schools, addressing concerns raised after the government enlisted ISKCON to provide meals. Speaking on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, Mr. Adhikari clarified that while ISKCON will supply "satvik" and protein-rich meals, eggs will be distributed separately by self-help groups (SHGs) starting August 1.

ISKCON's Role Sparks Debate

The controversy began when the government announced ISKCON's involvement in cooking mid-day meals for schools in Kolkata. Critics, including former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accused the BJP-led state government of attempting to impose vegetarianism and depriving children of eggs, a vital source of protein.

Mr. Adhikari's announcement aims to quell these concerns. "We want to ensure that our future generations receive protein-rich meals," he said, emphasizing the inclusion of eggs alongside ISKCON's offerings.

Increased Budget for Mid-Day Meals

In addition to resolving the egg controversy, the Chief Minister revealed that the government has raised the daily allocation for mid-day meals from ₹6.78 to ₹10 per student. This increase is expected to improve the quality and nutritional value of meals provided to schoolchildren.

Broader Education Reforms

The announcement comes as part of a broader push to improve education in the state. Mr. Adhikari distributed grants to 80,375 government and government-aided schools under the Samagra Shiksha Mission and pledged to fill all teacher vacancies. Approximately 50,000 new teachers will be appointed to address staffing shortages.

The education sector in West Bengal has been under scrutiny due to allegations of corruption during the previous Trinamool Congress regime. A cash-for-jobs scam involving the recruitment of teachers and non-teaching staff led to arrests of several officials and party leaders.
