Wayanad suspends quarries, adventure tourism, trekking after heavy rain alert

District Collector V. Chelsasini has suspended operations at quarries, adventure tourism centres and trekking sites in Wayanad after an India Meteorological department alert warned of the possibility of heavy rainfall in the district.

Safety order after rainfall alert

The order was issued by the District Collector in her capacity as Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, with public safety cited as the reason for the restrictions.

The suspension applies to quarry operations, adventure tourism centres and trekking sites, all of which have been brought under the safety order in view of the weather alert.

Relocation responsibilities fixed

The order also sets out the steps to be taken if people have to be shifted from disaster-prone or vulnerable areas in Wayanad.

In such cases, the respective grama panchayat secretaries must take the required steps for relocation.

For families living in areas near the township construction site at Elston Estate in Kalpetta, relocation must be handled separately if they are threatened by soil erosion.

In that situation, the Kalpetta municipal secretary must act in coordination with the township’s chief operating officer.

Meppadi areas included in preparedness plan

The District Collector has directed the secretary of Meppadi grama panchayat to arrange relocation, if required, from the Kalladi-Anakkampoyil tunnel construction site.

The same direction covers the Mundakkai-Chooralmala disaster-affected area and other locations within Meppadi grama panchayat that are threatened by landslides.

The Collector said penal action would be taken under Section 51(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, against those who violate the order.
