Veerashaiva-Lingayat Institutions Drive Educational Progress in North Karnataka

Ballari: Veerashaiva-Lingayat organisations have been instrumental in promoting education in North Karnataka, even prior to India's Independence, according to M.B. Patil, Minister for Large and Medium Industries. Speaking at the centenary celebrations of Heerada Sugamma School, the first institution established by the Veerashaiva Vidyavardhaka Sangha, Patil highlighted the community's enduring contribution to education in the region. The two-day event was held on the school premises in Ballari.

Institutions Beyond Community Boundaries

Patil lauded the efforts of institutions like Siddaganga Mutt and Gavisiddeshwara Mutt in Koppal, which have provided education to thousands of children without limiting their services to any particular community. He emphasized the importance of preserving cultural traditions while embracing modern advancements, such as artificial intelligence and robotics, to ensure Indian educational institutions remain globally competitive, especially with the entry of foreign universities into the country.

Call for Efficient Use of Resources

The minister urged that donor contributions to educational institutions be utilized effectively for societal development. He expressed optimism that these institutions would continue to play a vital role in fostering progress. The seer of Mahanta Mutt, Emmiganur, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that Veerashaiva Mutts have historically contributed to society not only through religious activities but also by establishing educational institutions that spread knowledge and upheld the egalitarian principles of Basavanna.

Historical and Future Perspectives

Recalling past efforts to expand education in the Kalyana Karnataka region, Patil mentioned that former Chief Minister S. Nijalingappa had facilitated the collection of a 2.5% cess from farmers to fund educational initiatives. He also called for simplifying government regulations to make it easier to establish colleges and ensure the delivery of quality education.

New Projects and Initiatives

The event also saw the launch of several initiatives. Minister B. Nagendra inaugurated the foundation work for stone statues of the revered seers of Hanagal, Ujjaini, and Heerada Sugamma. Ballari MP E. Tukaram laid the foundation for free hostels proposed by the Veerashaiva Vidyavardhaka Sangha. Tukaram described Heerada Sugamma as an "Akshara Avva" (Mother of Education) and encouraged collective efforts toward the development of educational institutions while upholding constitutional values.

Prominent Dignitaries Attend Celebrations

The centenary celebrations were attended by several notable figures, including former Minister Allam Veerabhadrappa, Sangha President K. Kanekal Mahantesh, and Veena Kashappanavar, national president of the All-India Veerashaiva Lingayat Mahasabha women’s wing. Other dignitaries included Ballari Mayor P. Gaddeppa and Lidkar Chairman Mundrigi Nagaraj.

The event underscored the pivotal role of Veerashaiva-Lingayat institutions in shaping the educational landscape of North Karnataka, blending tradition with modernity to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving world.
