Remote-Controlled Robots Enter Combat as Ukraine Seeks to Counter Russian Numerical Advantage

Ukrainian forces are deploying unmanned ground vehicles armed with explosives to strike enemy positions and preserve infantry lives in the war's fifth year, military units operating near the northeastern front confirmed.

Four-wheeled robots nicknamed "Hyenas" crawl toward Russian trenches carrying payloads, then attack dugouts or block advances, according to "Chimera," a 44-year-old military mechanic identified by his call sign who works in a workshop preparing the vehicles for deployment. Each machine can transport 20 kilograms, 44 pounds, of explosives, which he described as "very powerful".

New Technology Across 1,200-Kilometre Front

The workshop operated by Ukraine's Third Army Corps is one of many that have emerged along the 1,200-kilometre (745-mile) front line, part of Kyiv's effort to gain a technological advantage over Russian forces. Chimera said similar unmanned vehicle models have also been used to capture Russian prisoners.

Strategy to Protect Outmanned Forces

Unmanned ground vehicles now form a critical element of Ukraine's approach to combat as its outmanned army faces continuous Russian infantry attacks, military sources said. The strategy aims to fight more effectively while protecting troops on a battlefield dominated by drones, where nearly any movement risks detection and lethal response.
