UK PM Burnham backs US-Denmark Arctic security agreement as Trump deal takes shape

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has congratulated Denmark and the United States following an agreement to strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic region.

Burnham and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen held a call and "welcomed the US' commitment to the region", Downing Street said. The conversation took place on Sunday morning.

Arctic Security Pact

The two leaders "discussed the forthcoming signing of a new deal to strengthen security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic area between the US, Greenland and Denmark this week", according to a No 10 spokesperson.

The agreement follows President Donald Trump's statement that he had secured a deal with Denmark to bolster US military presence in Greenland, made after he had threatened to take the island by force.

UN General Assembly Discussions

The Prime Minister and his Danish counterpart also discussed their upcoming visits to New York for the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

Burnham said he would use the trip to advance work on issues affecting people at home, including reducing the cost of living through greater global stability and delivering security through closer international partnerships.

The new Arctic security deal represents a significant development in regional defence cooperation between the three nations involved.
