UAE women's cricket team seeks historic Asia Cup semifinal spot against Bangladesh

The United Arab Emirates women's cricket team stands on the verge of a breakthrough achievement, needing just one win against Bangladesh in their final Group B match to secure a historic place in the Women's T20 Asia Cup semifinals. The clash at Dubai International Stadium, scheduled for 6:30 pm, marks a symbolic full-circle moment: Bangladesh was also the UAE's opponent when they made their international debut in 2007, suffering an inauspicious dismissal for just nine runs.

From Humble Beginnings to the Brink of History

Nearly two decades after that debut with a team described as 'mothers and daughters', the UAE have transformed into one of the world's most consistent associate cricket teams. Last year, the UAE earned ODI status and stunned Zimbabwe, an ICC full-member team, in a bilateral series: achieving their first-ever ODI series win, first-ever ODI victory, and first-ever T20 series win against a full member.

"We are potentially just one victory away from being among the top four teams in Asia. That would be a huge step for UAE women's cricket, especially with the first Asia Cup being hosted in the UAE," former UAE captain Chaya Mughal told the Khaleej Times.

Tournament Progress and the Path Forward

After losing their opening match to Sri Lanka, the UAE bounced back with a win against Indonesia. Esha Oza's side now faces Bangladesh, against whom they have never secured a victory. Bangladesh has been put in to bat by the UAE, with the match featuring squads captained by Nigar Sultana for Bangladesh and Esha Oza for the UAE.

Building Momentum Through Development

The UAE's rise reflects the fruits of visionary initiatives by the Emirates Cricket Board, which won the ICC Development Award. "A few years ago, finding a good group of players who could play cricket was really difficult. But now, our development programme is doing so well," Mughal said. "The best part is that we now have a lot of players waiting for their turn and trying to earn a spot in the national squad".

Former UAE men's captain Ahmed Raza, who coached the women's team until recently, expressed confidence in the side's ability to upset Bangladesh. "Most of the players in this squad have experienced this before. This team started believing in themselves after those moments," Raza said, referencing historic wins against Thailand and Papua New Guinea.

Growing the Game at Home

The tournament, being hosted in the UAE, provides an opportunity to inspire young cricketers. Trophy tours were conducted at various schools, with many schoolgirls expected to attend the match. "This is an opportunity for us to create awareness in UAE schools," Mughal said.

Mughal emphasized the significance of competing against top Asian teams: "Getting this exposure for our players and allowing them to play against the players they have always dreamt of playing against, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and, if they qualify, India as well, is a huge experience for us".

The UAE's qualification for a third consecutive Asia Cup already represents progress, but a semifinal berth would cement their status among Asia's elite women's cricket nations.
