Shafali Verma anchored India to 117 for 5 in 14 overs against Thailand in their Women's T20 Asia Cup Group A opener in Dubai on Sunday, but a dramatic collapse saw the defending champions lose three wickets in two balls to hand Thailand an unexpected lifeline.

The Indian opener brought up her 19th T20I half-century with an entertaining knock that included a six over wide long off, reaching the milestone in style before falling shortly after for a well-made 50. Verma's dismissal triggered a stunning collapse as Suleeporn Laomi claimed two wickets in consecutive deliveries, first catching and bowling the set batter and then trapping Richa Ghosh for a golden duck.

Thailand Spinners Dismantle Middle Order

From a comfortable 108 for 2, India suddenly found themselves at 112 for 5 as Thailand's spinners exploited the Dubai conditions. Stand-in captain Thipatcha Putthawong had earlier dismissed Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who attempted to hit against the turn and could only find a leading edge that was pouched by Phannita Maya at point.

The scalp extended Putthawong's lead at the top of the Women's T20I wicket-taking charts, moving her two wickets clear of India's Deepti Sharma with 170 career wickets. Pratika Rawal, making her T20I debut, was also dismissed by Laomi, bowled for 91 as the ball kept low and snuck under her attempted punch.

Verma's Fireworks Light Up Powerplay

Verma had earlier set the tone with aggressive strokeplay, accumulating her eighth boundary of the innings when she cross-batted over the bowler to bring up India's hundred. Her partnership with Smriti Mandhana yielded 38 runs before a moment of brilliance from Aphisara Suwanchonrathi ended the opening stand.

Mandhana was run out for a casual second run attempt, jogging through rather than sprinting, and was caught short as Aphisara's direct hit from the deep found her outside the crease. Mandhana had contributed 13 runs, including three boundaries, before her lackadaisical running cost her the wicket.

Milestone Match for Deepti Sharma

The contest marked another landmark in Deepti Sharma's distinguished career, as she became only the third Indian player to feature in 150 women's T20Is. The experienced all-rounder joined captain Harmanpreet Kaur (202 matches) and Smriti Mandhana (171) in an exclusive Indian club, also becoming the 12th woman cricketer overall to reach the 150-match mark.

Before Sunday's match, Deepti had accumulated 1,270 runs and taken 168 wickets across 149 T20Is since her international debut over a decade ago. She walked out to bat following Richa Ghosh's dismissal, facing a high full toss from Laomi to avoid the hat-trick.

Tournament Context and India's Recent Struggles

India entered the Asia Cup seeking to rediscover their rhythm after an inconsistent 2026 that has seen them lose nine of their 16 T20Is this year. Their most recent defeat against Australia ended their Women's T20 World Cup campaign at the group stage, raising questions about their ability to perform against stronger opposition.

Head coach Amol Muzumdar refused to dwell on the recent run of results, insisting his young side has significant scope for improvement and is focused on playing aggressive cricket. Speaking ahead of the Thailand opener, Muzumdar emphasized that the Asia Cup represented an opportunity to establish momentum for the next six months.

"This group has been a special one," Muzumdar said, pointing to recent Test victories including a win at Lord's and the ODI World Cup triumph. "They're hungry for success, they're hungry to winning some tournaments".

Missing Pieces and Debutant Opportunities

India are without star batter Jemimah Rodrigues, who missed the Asia Cup squad due to a hamstring concern and is undergoing rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Muzumdar acknowledged her absence would be felt, describing her as "a clutch player for us," though he expressed confidence that incoming players would deliver.

Pratika Rawal received her debut cap as Rodrigues' replacement, partnering Verma after Mandhana's dismissal and contributing 26 runs including a six over sweeper cover before her dismissal. The 22-year-old looked comfortable against Thailand's spinners, sweeping and driving confidently before Laomi's delivery stayed low.

Thailand Women, meanwhile, entered the contest buoyed by their opening victory over Hong Kong, where captain Naruemol Chaiwai's 43 helped them defend 120 for nine. However, Chaiwai missed Sunday's match due to injury, with Putthawong stepping in as stand-in captain.

India are grouped alongside Thailand, Hong Kong, China and Pakistan in Group A, with the seven-time champions seeking to extend their dominance of a tournament they have won three times in its T20 format since 2016-17. The Asian Games in Japan follow next month, adding further significance to their Asia Cup campaign.
