Authorities assessing typhoon damage in Chiba prefecture have revealed that around 100,000 Nishikigoi ornamental carp ready for sale were swept away after heavy rain breached some levees at a lake near Tokyo.

Flooding hits aquafarm facilities

Typhoon Dujuan approached the region about a week ago and brought flooding to rice paddy fields and other farmland in northern Chiba.

Facilities where carp and eels were being cultivated near Lake Imbanuma were also flooded.

The damage comes as Chiba prefecture’s farming, forestry and fisheries sectors are expected to face losses of at least US$550,000.

Sale-ready Nishikigoi swept away

Kenji Tani, who runs an aquafarm in Narita, had been overseas to attend a Nishikigoi exhibition before returning home on Tuesday.

After his return, he realised the severity of the damage at the aquafarm.

His farm had about 100,000 carp ready ahead of the initially scheduled start of sales on Sunday.

All but 200 to 300 of the carp were swept away after the aquafarm facilities were flooded.

Wider local losses under assessment

The flooding followed heavy rain caused by the typhoon, which breached some levees at a lake in Chiba prefecture near Tokyo.

Authorities are assessing the widespread damage to local farming and fisheries after the typhoon inundated farmland and aquaculture facilities in the area.
