Poothrikka panchayat bypoll triggers speculations as Twenty20 downplays BJP bonhomie

Twenty20 will contest the Kolencherry East ward bypoll in Poothrikka panchayat independently, fielding Deenamma Jacob against candidates from both the United Democratic Front and Left Democratic Front, in a move that has raised fresh questions about the party's alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The electoral contest was necessitated after Twenty20's Pooja Jomon resigned from both her positions as panchayat president and ward member in protest against the party's decision to join the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance ahead of the Assembly elections.

Twenty20 defends independent contest

Twenty20 chief Sabu M. Jacob dismissed suggestions of any rift with the BJP, asserting that the decision to avoid the NDA banner was taken in full consultation with the BJP leadership. "Poothrukka is one of our strongholds, and we still have six elected members in the panchayat," Mr. Jacob said. He emphasised that the bypoll concerns a ward that was held by Twenty20 before the party joined the NDA after the local body polls.

Mr. Jacob added that the party's campaign would focus on the alleged horse trading which led to the bypoll.

BJP frames decision as pragmatic move

P.P. Sajeev, BJP district president for Ernakulam East, described the arrangement as a pragmatic approach aimed at securing victory. He confirmed that BJP workers in the ward are actively involved in Twenty20's campaign.

The BJP, which has limited influence in the region, had not fielded a candidate in the ward during last year's local body polls either.

Electoral arithmetic and political fallout

In the 2025 local body elections, the Twenty20 candidate polled 303 votes and won by a margin of 49 votes against the Congress, while the CPI(M) finished a distant third with 125 votes.

The current bypoll pits Deenamma Jacob of Twenty20 against Saramma Paili Pilla of the UDF and Neethu Joyd of the LDF.

Ms. Jomon's resignation enabled UDF rule in the panchayat, as she had been elected president through a draw of lots after Twenty20 and the UDF were tied at seven seats each, while the LDF won two seats in the 16-member local body.

Despite the political churn, insiders from both Twenty20 and the BJP maintain that the independent contest reflects electoral strategy rather than alliance tensions.
