Trump expected to name intelligence chief Jay Clayton as AI tsar

US President Donald Trump is expected to appoint Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton as his top adviser on artificial intelligence, according to a source familiar with the decision.

The expected appointment would add the AI advisory responsibility to Clayton’s existing role as the head of the US intelligence community.

Clayton expected to retain intelligence role

Clayton already oversees 18 US intelligence agencies as the nation’s top spy.

He is expected to keep that role even if Trump names him to the AI position.

The president has called the position “AI tsar” in the past.

That would leave Clayton overseeing the country’s intelligence agencies while also serving as Trump’s senior adviser on artificial intelligence.

The expected decision has not yet been formally announced by the White House.

“Any personnel announcement will be announced directly by the president,” a White House official said in a statement when asked about Clayton being selected for the position.

“Any reporting until then is baseless speculation,” the official said.
