Tencent Holdings has rolled out Hy4, its latest flagship artificial intelligence model, as it seeks to challenge top open-weight rivals with enhanced agentic capabilities.

The company said the model is built to power its enterprise software ecosystem, including a comprehensive update to its workplace AI tool WorkBuddy.

Visual reasoning added to latest model

Released on Wednesday, Hy4 introduced visual understanding to Tencent’s AI line-up for the first time.

According to the Shenzhen-based company, the large language model can process images, analyse complex charts and conduct visual mathematical reasoning.

The new capabilities expand Hy4’s stated use beyond language-based tasks to include visual analysis and reasoning.

Tencent said the release marked the first time its AI line-up became “one of the strongest open-weight models available today”.

That assessment came from Tencent itself, which also acknowledged that Hy4 still trailed the world’s leading closed-source systems.

The company said the gap was particularly visible on challenging internal benchmarks covering research-level mathematics, long-horizon coding, model self-improvement and advanced visual question answering.

The rollout therefore combines Tencent’s claim of stronger open-weight performance with an acknowledgement of limits in several demanding areas of AI research and development.
