‘At some point it’s going to be too much’: global financiers grapple with AI risks

Global asset management executives warned at a Hong Kong summit that the artificial intelligence boom is creating unprecedented pressure for capital and infrastructure to keep pace with the technology’s expansion.

The concerns extend across debt markets, power grids and corporate productivity, according to executives who spoke at the Global Financial Leaders’ Investment Summit.

AI infrastructure demand raises financing questions

Investment in AI infrastructure could reach US$10 trillion over the next five years, Emmanuel Roman, CEO of Pimco, said during a panel discussion.

That projected investment would approach the size of the US$12 trillion US bond market, highlighting the scale of the capital demand tied to AI infrastructure.

“At some point in time, it’s going to be too much,” Roman said.

The comments point to questions over whether debt markets can absorb the financing needs created by the AI boom, while power grids and corporate productivity keep pace with the technology’s expansion.

The expansion is also being compared with a major historical transformation. Roman likened it to the Industrial Revolution in Britain in 1760.

Interest rates and geopolitics could trigger a downturn

Roman also pointed out that rising interest rates or intensifying geopolitical tensions could trigger a downturn.

That warning places the projected AI infrastructure investment against broader financial and geopolitical pressures that could affect the boom’s continuation.

The concerns were raised as global asset managers and investment banks grappled with the financial and infrastructure demands of the technology’s rapid growth at the Hong Kong summit.
