A delegation from the Telangana Rythu Sangham’s Warangal district committee submitted a memorandum to the General Manager of the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) in Warangal on Tuesday, seeking immediate intervention to address the problems faced by cotton farmers across Telangana.

The association urged the Central government to ensure a remunerative price of ₹12,000 per quintal for cotton farmers.

It also asked the government to direct CCI to undertake commercial procurement whenever market prices exceed the Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Farmers cite lower yields and rainfall

Speaking on the occasion, Telangana Rythu Sangham State convener Somidi Srinivas said cotton farmers were facing severe financial difficulties after crop yields declined because of unfavourable weather conditions and inadequate rainfall this season.

The association said immediate action was needed to protect growers and address the difficulties affecting cotton cultivation across Telangana.

Demand for CCI procurement

Srinivas alleged that private traders were exploiting cotton growers by offering different prices for cotton of similar quality.

He questioned CCI’s role in protecting farmers’ interests and demanded that the corporation begin commercial procurement when prevailing market prices were higher than the MSP.

According to Srinivas, farmers should not be left entirely dependent on private traders for the sale of their cotton.

He demanded that the Central government intervene immediately to protect cotton growers from exploitation and ensure that they received remunerative prices for their produce.
