Tamil Nadu allows instant digital downloads of driving licences and vehicle registrations

Tamil Nadu will allow applicants to download driving licences and vehicle registration certificates digitally on the same day they complete their driving test or vehicle registration, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay told the Assembly.

The facility will be rolled out across the State from September 15, Mr. Vijay said in a suo motu statement.

Immediate download replaces weeks-long wait

At present, driving licences and registration certificates embedded with chips are sent to applicants by post, a process that takes between one week and one month. The new system will eliminate that waiting period entirely, allowing applicants to download the documents as soon as the registration or test is complete.

Government departments and other bodies will be able to scan a QR code on the digital certificates to verify their authenticity. The facility will also allow people to download fresh copies if their original documents are lost or damaged.

'Anywhere Registration' to follow in phases

Mr. Vijay announced that the government would introduce an 'Anywhere Registration/Licensing' system in a phased manner for driving licences and vehicle registration. The facility will enable people to obtain licences and certificates from any Regional Transport Office in the State, not just the one in their jurisdiction.

The Chief Minister said the objective was to ensure corruption-free and transparent administration and avoid delays in obtaining driving licences and registration certificates.
