India, Moldova Discuss UNSC Reforms, Terrorism Cooperation During Historic Visit

President Droupadi Murmu, on her landmark state visit to Moldova, engaged in high-level discussions with Moldovan President Maia Sandu on reforming multilateral organisations, including the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), and enhancing cooperation in combating terrorism. This marks the first visit by an Indian head of state to the Eastern European nation since diplomatic ties were established in 1992.

Expanding Bilateral Cooperation

The talks between the two leaders also delved into broadening ties in key sectors such as trade, digital transformation, healthcare, education, and agriculture. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that both sides are keen on fostering collaboration in pharmaceuticals, information technology, culture, and capacity building.

As a symbolic gesture, President Murmu presented a bust of Mahatma Gandhi to President Sandu, underscoring India's commitment to strengthening cultural ties. She also paid homage to Moldova's national hero, Stefan cel Mare, by laying a wreath at his monument.

Focus on UNSC Reforms

A significant portion of the dialogue revolved around the need for reforming multilateral organisations, including the UNSC. India has long advocated for a more representative and equitable global governance structure, and this issue remains central to its diplomatic engagements.

Business Forum and Economic Prospects

Murmu and Sandu jointly addressed the India-Moldova Business Forum, which brought together business leaders from both nations to explore opportunities in trade, investment, and innovation. Areas such as digital public infrastructure, food processing, logistics, and skills development emerged as potential avenues for collaboration.

A 20-member Indian business delegation, representing sectors such as agritech, IT, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing, accompanied the President. The forum highlighted Moldova's growing appeal as a destination for Indian students, with around 2,000 currently pursuing higher education there, particularly in medicine.

Strategic Outreach to Eastern Europe

President Murmu's visit is part of India's broader strategy to deepen ties with Eastern Europe, diversifying its European partnerships beyond traditional allies like France and Germany. Following her Moldova visit, she is scheduled to travel to North Macedonia and Romania to further this outreach.

President Murmu extended an invitation to President Sandu to visit India, signaling a commitment to sustaining and expanding this emerging partnership.
