Posters Remain on Ernakulam Collectorate Walls Despite Removal Deadline

Despite an August 1 deadline to clear campaign posters from the walls of the Civil Station at Kakkanad, the five-storey building remains dotted with materials from various service organisations. The decision to curb the unchecked display of posters was taken on June 20, but compliance has been uneven.

Designated Space Ignored

To address the issue, authorities had allocated a dedicated area at the northern entrance of the complex, installing five notice boards on an entire wall for announcements. However, posters continue to appear across multiple parts of the building. While some materials have been removed, organisations affiliated with major political parties, including the CPI(M)-backed Kerala NGO Union and the Congress-affiliated Kerala NGO Association, have not fully adhered to the agreement.

Resistance to Centralised Display

The Kerala NGO Union has argued that limiting posters to a single designated spot is impractical, as employees frequently use other entrances. "Our stand is that campaign materials should be displayed on all floors without defacing the walls," a union leader stated, adding that remaining posters would be removed in the coming days.

In contrast, a leader from the Kerala NGO Association emphasised the importance of sticking to the consensus on using the common space, warning that deviations undermine the initiative's purpose.

Why It Matters

The persistence of posters despite a collective decision highlights the challenges of enforcing regulations in politically active spaces. With organisations divided over the practicality of the plan, the issue underscores the tension between maintaining order and accommodating political expression.

As of now, the walls of the Ernakulam Collectorate remain a battleground for visibility, even as authorities and organisations grapple with finding common ground.
