Polling Ends for Key Local Body Bypolls in Gujarat

Voting for high-stakes by-elections across Gujarat wrapped up on Tuesday, marking a critical juncture in the state's local political landscape. Polling was conducted for six vacant seats in the Devgadh Baria Municipality, alongside by-elections for the Chikhlod panchayat seat in Kheda district and the Palaj District Panchayat seat in Anand district. The elections were held peacefully under tight security arrangements.

Devgadh Baria Municipality: A Test of Political Fortunes

In Devgadh Baria Municipality, voting took place in three wards where six seats were up for grabs. The by-election was necessitated by the disqualification of six BJP councillors for alleged anti-party activities. A total of 7,406 voters were eligible to cast their ballots at 10 polling stations, which were heavily guarded by police personnel to ensure a fair process.

The contests varied across wards. Ward No. 1 saw a triangular battle between the BJP, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and an independent candidate. In Ward No. 4, the BJP and AAP were locked in a direct fight for two seats, while Ward No. 5 featured a head-to-head contest between the BJP and Congress for three seats. The Gujarat High Court had cleared the way for polling on all six seats just a day prior, overturning an interim stay order.

However, the legal challenge to the disqualification of the six councillors remains unresolved, with the High Court scheduled to hear the matter on August 10. The political turmoil stems from a no-confidence motion against BJP-ruled municipality president Dharmendra Kalal last October, which led to months of legal and political wrangling.

Chikhlod Panchayat Seat: A Symbolic Contest

The by-election for the Chikhlod panchayat seat in the newly formed Phagvel taluka carried significant political and emotional weight. Villagers had boycotted the general election earlier in protest against the state government's decision to merge Chikhlod into Phagvel taluka. Tuesday’s voting was held at three polling stations for 2,385 eligible voters.

Following the withdrawal of an independent candidate, the contest narrowed to a direct fight between BJP’s Hiral Rathod and Congress’s Sonal Parmar. The outcome will be closely watched as a reflection of public sentiment in the newly carved taluka.

Palaj District Panchayat Seat: Prestige Battle for BJP

In Anand district, polling for the vacant Palaj District Panchayat seat in Petlad taluka recorded a voter turnout of 58.91%. The seat had fallen vacant following the resignation of BJP member Pradeep Patel, who was elected in the previous district panchayat elections.

The contest emerged as a prestige battle for the ruling BJP, which had won 33 of the 40 seats in the last district panchayat election. The Congress mounted an aggressive campaign, while the AAP added a third dimension to the race, making it a triangular contest.

These by-elections are expected to offer insights into the shifting political dynamics in Gujarat ahead of larger electoral battles.
