P.P. Umer Musliyar Koyyode chosen Samastha general secretary

Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama has chosen P.P. Umar Musliyar Koyyode from Kannur as its new general secretary, filling a vacancy created by the demise of K. Alikutty Musliyar in July.

The Sunni scholars’ forum picked him for the post at a ‘mushawara’ (executive committee) meeting held in Kozhikode on Wednesday (September 23, 2026).

Mr. Umar Musliyar had been serving as the treasurer of the organisation before his elevation to the general secretary’s post.

Office-bearers named after reshuffle

M.T. Abdulla Musliyar, joint secretary, had been temporarily holding charge after the post of general secretary fell vacant.

Syed Mohammed Jifri Muthukoya Thangal, Samastha president, told the media that Mr. Abdulla Musliyar would be the new treasurer of the organisation.

Mr. Thangal also said V. Moosakoya Musliyar of Wayanad and A.V. Abdurahman Musliyar of Kozhikode would be vice-presidents.

Panangangara Hyder Faizy of Malappuram would replace Mr. Abdulla Musliyar as joint secretary.

The changes place Mr. Umar Musliyar in the general secretary’s role while moving Mr. Abdulla Musliyar from temporary charge to the treasurer’s position.

Consultative committee formed

Mr. Thangal said an eight-member consultative committee had been formed to deliberate on important matters related to the Samastha.

He said the panel was being set up because the ‘mushawara’ meetings are held only once in two months.

Apart from the president, general secretary, and treasurer, the other members of the consultative committee would be Mr. Abdurahman Musliyar, Bahauddeen Muhammed Nadwi, P.K. Hamsakutty Musliyar Adrissery, Vakkod Moideenkutty Musliyar, and P.M. Abdulsalam Baqavi.

The arrangement gives the organisation a smaller forum to deliberate on important matters between the less frequent ‘mushawara’ meetings, as described by Mr. Thangal.

Fatwa committee to be reconstituted

The ‘fatwa’ committee of the organisation would be reconstituted to respond to important questions related to the Samastha.

Mr. Thangal would be the chairman of the reconstituted committee, and Mr. Abdulla Musliyar would be its convener.

Mr. Umer Musliyar, P.K. Moosakutty Hasrath, C.K. Abdurahman Faizy Aripra, and Abdul Gafoor Anwari would be members of the committee.

On the critical remarks of Samastha secretary Mukkam Umar Faizy about the Indian Union Muslim League and the United Democratic Front government over the Waqf dispute, Mr. Thangal said the new committee would discuss them and take an appropriate decision.

He added that the committee would call all stakeholders.
