Nepal floods push thousands toward migration as homes and livelihoods wash away

Nepal's recent floods have stripped thousands of survivors not only of their homes but of the economic foundations needed to rebuild, pushing many toward migration as the sole path forward.

Taradevi Tamang lost everything when floodwaters tore through her village in Nuwakot district two weeks ago, her tin-roofed home, years of accumulated savings, gold jewellery, and 265 piglets and 34 wild boars that sustained her family. The 50-year-old now shelters in a government-run facility, one of roughly 3,500 people seeking refuge across the three worst-hit districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading.

Twice displaced, nothing left to rebuild

For survivors like Tamang, the catastrophe compounds earlier losses. "We lost our house during the earthquake but still had the land to rebuild with aid," she said at a shelter in Nuwakot, referring to the 2015 quake. "We thought our lives would improve, but it's just one stress after another. My heart gets heavy thinking about what to do. We don't have anything to hold on to now".

The swollen Trishuli River has receded since the disaster, which left more than 1,300 dead and over 5,000 missing. Outside the army camp in Bidur, helicopters continue ferrying relief materials while relatives arrive carrying photographs of the disappeared, searching for news or posting fliers on walls in hope of recognition.

In Dhunge Bazaar, entire settlements have been reduced to rubble. Mud stains three storeys high on buildings far from the riverbank mark how high the water rose, while the ground beneath remains unstable as the Trishuli roars past.

With land, livestock and savings erased, the economic calculus for flood survivors has shifted sharply. Unlike the 2015 earthquake, which left land intact for rebuilding, the floods have removed even that foothold, leaving migration abroad as the emerging solution for families with nothing left to anchor them.
