Murder-accused jumps from court building, fractures both legs during escape attempt

A murder-accused undertrial suffered fractures to both legs after jumping from the first floor of a court building in Udhagamandalam while allegedly attempting to escape police custody following the cancellation of his bail.

Bharath, 25, a resident of Thottlingi in Masinagudi, had been charged with murder in 2024 and was released on bail while his case was being heard at the Mahila court in Udhagamandalam.

Bail cancelled over alleged threats

It has been alleged that Bharath had been threatening the family of the victim while out on bail, leading to the cancellation of his bail. The Masinagudi police had detained Bharath and brought him to the court in Udhagamandalam.

Escape attempt from court premises

It has been alleged that Bharath realised he would once again be taken to prison and tried to flee from the police by jumping from the first floor of the court complex. The jump resulted in fractures to both his legs.

Bharath has since been admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Udhagamandalam, where he is receiving treatment for his injuries. The incident highlights the risks associated with escape attempts from secure facilities and the consequences of alleged witness intimidation while on bail.
