MTR technician, winner at global vocational competition, will apply insights to job

Gordon Tang Kwong-tai, a 22-year-old MTR Corporation technician, has said he hopes to bring lessons from the WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai back to his railway repair work after winning a silver medal in his category.

Three days of railway fault challenges

Tang, who has worked at the MTR Corporation for four years, competed in the international vocational skills event last week against peers from around the world.

He described the contest as a journey of determination that broadened his horizons while testing his ability in train repair.

The competition involved three days of intense examination in which Tang had to fix faults in railway systems.

“This competition is quite niche but I hope to contribute in this field, as well as show my skills in the international arena. I hope I can apply the knowledge learned from the competition to my job at the MTR,” Tang told a radio programme on Tuesday.

Hong Kong team wins record haul

Tang’s silver medal was among 15 prizes won by Hong Kong’s team across different fields at the WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai last week.

The 41-member Hong Kong team marked the city’s largest delegation to date at the tournament.

Its 15 medals also represented a record number of accolades for Hong Kong at the competition, which is known as the Olympics for vocational skills.

The result placed Tang’s achievement within a wider performance by the Hong Kong delegation across multiple vocational fields.

For Tang, the win was tied not only to international recognition but also to the practical aim of applying knowledge from the competition to his MTR work.
