Migratory birds return to Kashmir's Manasbal Lake after ecological revival

Manasbal Lake, the deepest freshwater lake in India, is witnessing a resurgence of migratory birds after years of ecological decline. Between December 2025 and January 2026, locals observed a significant increase in bird activity, prompting the Wullar-Manasbal Development Authority (WMDA) to organise a winter bird-watching festival.

Rare Bird Species Sighted

Birdwatchers have reported sightings of rare species, including Mallards, White-Headed Ducks, Eurasian Hoopoes, and Golden Eagles. According to WMDA Chief Executive Officer Ahsanul Haq Chishti, the lake currently hosts over 46 bird species from 23 families. This marks a significant improvement in its biodiversity.

Restoration Efforts Behind the Revival

The revival of Manasbal Lake is attributed to extensive restoration efforts. Over 7,200 cubic meters of weeds were removed, and dredging was conducted across 70,000 square feet to improve water circulation and maintain the lake's depth. "The lake is rejuvenating with clear waters and long strips of water channels," said Mr. Chishti.

Wildlife photographer Bilal Nasir Zargar, who has documented the lake's birdlife for 12 years, noted that migratory birds had dwindled five years ago due to a drop in water levels. However, recent improvements in water quality have encouraged the return of species like the Horned Grebe and Long-Eared Owl.

Water Budgeting and Waste Management

To sustain the lake's recovery, the WMDA has initiated water budgeting in collaboration with the J&K Water Resources Regulatory Authority. Mechanised gates and gauges will be installed to monitor water levels and ensure ecological balance.

Efforts to control pollution include the installation of trash guards on Lar irrigation canal junctions to prevent solid waste from entering the lake. A sanitation contract has also been reinstated, leading to waste collection across 6.44 lakh square meters. Additionally, a sewage treatment plant and solid waste management facility are being developed to treat effluents before they reach the lake.

Community Involvement and Sustainable Tourism

The WMDA is actively involving locals in conservation efforts through joint programmes such as sanitation drives, World Wetland Day celebrations, and bird-watching festivals. The focus is on promoting sustainable, eco-friendly tourism to ensure the long-term health of the lake.

Manasbal Lake's revival is not only a win for biodiversity but also a testament to the impact of coordinated ecological restoration efforts. With continued attention to water quality, waste management, and community engagement, the lake is poised to remain a vital habitat for migratory birds. [S1-S10]
