Maximiliano Araujo becomes first Indian-origin scorer in FIFA World Cup

First Indian-Origin Scorer, Mario Miranda, and the Big Foot Museum of Loutolim

Loutolim, a picturesque village in South Goa, has added another feather to its cap. Known as the home of iconic cartoonist Mario Miranda, the village now boasts a connection to football history through Maximiliano Araujo, the first player of Indian descent to score a goal in the FIFA World Cup. Araujo, representing Uruguay, netted the equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia.

Araujo, who has been part of Uruguay's national team since 2023, has a distant ancestral link to Loutolim. His grandfather traced the family’s roots to this vibrant cultural village, located about 10 kilometres from Madgao. Currently playing for Sporting CP in Portugal, Araujo first made headlines with a debut goal against Manchester City in the 2024 UEFA Champions League, despite his team’s 1-4 loss.

Loutolim, already celebrated for its rich cultural heritage and Miranda’s whimsical sketches of Goan life, seems to have foreshadowed Araujo’s historic achievement. The village is home to the Big Foot museum, a private open-air cultural space created by artist Maendra Jocelino Araujo Alvares. Spread across nine acres, the museum recreates scenes of rural Goa, featuring traditional homes, artifacts like porcelain plates and palanquins, and even a demonstration of the feni-making process.

The museum’s centerpiece is a naturally formed impression of a large human foot on a rock, which lends the site its name. It also houses a unique Left Handers Museum, established in 2017 by Sandeip Vishnoi. This section features bronzed busts of famous left-handed personalities, including cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh, boxer MC Mary Kom, and football legend Diego Maradona, sculpted by Sunil Devre. Maximiliano Araujo, who plays as a left-back and left-winger, would make a fitting addition to this collection.

Football and feni are integral to Goa’s identity, and with Araujo’s World Cup milestone, Loutolim has yet another reason to celebrate its unique heritage.
