M.K. Suresh Kumar, who has handled news reporting for Siraj newspaper in Palakkad district for over two decades, has received the third K.M. Basheer Memorial Award for his commitment to Malayalam news reporting.

He received the award from Tourism Minister P.C. Vishnunadh and Madin Academy chairperson Syed Ibrahim Khaleel Bukhari at a function held in Malappuram on Thursday.

The award consisted of a memento, a citation and a cash prize.

Recognition for sustained reporting

Suresh Kumar’s recognition comes after more than two decades of handling news reporting for Siraj in Palakkad district.

While presenting the award, Syed Ibrahim Khaleel Bukhari praised him as someone who embodied the spirit and essence of Palakkad.

The citation thus acknowledged both his commitment to Malayalam news reporting and his long association with reporting in the district.

Award instituted in Basheer’s memory

The Muslim Jamaat instituted the award in memory of journalist K.M. Basheer.

Basheer died in an accident in Thiruvananthapuram in 2019, an incident that had shocked Keralam and triggered outrage against reckless driving.

The presentation in Malappuram marked the third edition of the memorial award.

The award’s memento, citation and cash prize were presented to Suresh Kumar by the Tourism Minister and the Madin Academy chairperson.
