Lucknow's iconic Indian Coffee House closes, leaving residents without affordable meeting space

Social Space Crisis in State Capital

A 42-year-old Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam employee has spent over ₹1,500 each time he meets friends at Hazratganj in the past month—seven times more than usual—because Lucknow's iconic Indian Coffee House at the main intersection remains temporarily shut.

Vinayak Singh said that when he calls the coffee house number, staff reply they will reopen soon, forcing him and friends to adjoining Cafe Coffee Day where each beverage or snack costs at least seven times more. "I used to visit the place daily in the 1990s as a student of Lucknow University, when it was the centre of debate and deliberations with people from all walks of life spending time," he recalled.

A Meeting Ground for Generations

The over 700 square feet space has left hundreds of locals in distress who have fond memories of the vibrant venue. Veteran political analyst Sharat Pradhan, who first visited in the early 1970s, said he had been there many times with U.P. Chief Ministers Veer Bahadur Singh and Narayan Dutt Tiwari, while former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar was also a regular visitor when travelling to Lucknow. "It was a social space where journalists, academicians, students, politicians and other professionals meet as equals to freely talk, share ideas, and debate public issues; this shared space helped in imparting new ideas in society," Pradhan said.

He added that socialist icon Ram Manohar Lohia used to visit in the 1950s, when a cup of tea cost 50 paise while coffee was slightly costlier, and pakora or fritters of many kinds were served alongside dosa.

Staff Issues Behind Closure

The coffee house, run by Indian Coffee Workers Co-operative Society limited, shut temporarily due to staff issues, an unidentified person at the official Lucknow number said, adding it will reopen soon.

Political commentator Ram Dutt Tripathi, a patron since 1980, said the closure may be linked to poor planning as staff could be hired any day. "In case of food and beverages, if they not want to invest on catering, certain items can be ordered daily from nearby eateries; it will help in allowing the coffee house to be run with minimum cost, but keep it open is the core issue as Lucknow faces broader problem of lack of social space where ordinary people can gather to talk, read the news, and debate political and social issues," Tripathi said.

Singh fears the prime location could be a factor behind non-operation, as people with ulterior motives may want the space permanently closed so other high-priced restaurants could operate freely. "Every nearby eatery costs over five times what was offered at the coffee house; hence closer may be linked with vested interest," the government employee said.
