Andhra Pradesh is likely to see rain from October 15 after a three-week dry spell, as a low-pressure area is expected to form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Amaravati, said an upper-air cyclonic circulation is present over the South Andaman Sea. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on October 13.

Rain forecast across the State

The system may bring light to moderate showers across north and south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema from October 15 to 19.

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely in the coastal districts on October 16, 17 and 18. Rayalaseema may receive isolated heavy rainfall on October 16 and 17.

The State may also experience thunderstorms and strong winds along with the rain, with wind speeds reaching up to 50 kmph.

The forecast comes after a prolonged dry period, during which Andhra Pradesh went through three weeks without the rainfall indicated in the latest outlook.

Rainfall deficit remains a concern

The State’s overall rainfall deficit had declined during the last week of September after many districts received heavy rainfall because of a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.

However, the three-week dry spell that followed has pushed the deficit percentages higher again. The overall rainfall deficit has climbed to 41.7%, while all districts in the State are reporting deficient rainfall.

Prakasam district has reported the steepest rainfall deficit, at 66.2%. The forecast rain is therefore being issued against a backdrop of deficient rainfall across the State.

Monsoon transition

Separately, the IMD said conditions are becoming favourable for the further withdrawal of the South-West Monsoon from the remaining parts of the country.

The conditions are also becoming favourable for the simultaneous commencement of northeast monsoon rains over the Southern Peninsula during the next three days.

The report was published on October 13, 2026 at 12:18 am IST.
